Our Role
- Janel Sweeny has been a Reading Specialist at White Oaks for ten years. She has two grown children and has taught K, 1st, 4th, and Title I. Reading at home or school is her favorite thing to do.
- Jennifer Haws has been a Reading Specialist at White Oaks for two years. Mrs. Haws previously taught first grade for Virginia Beach and served as a R.S. at John B. Dey Elementary. In her free time, Mrs. Haws enjoys reading with her 2 children, scrapbooking, and golf.
- Carolyn Falor is new to White Oaks Elementary. She also serves as a Reading Specialist at Glenwood Elementary.

Meet the Reading Specialists
There are two main roles of the reading specialist as outlined by
Virginia Beach Schools.
First, reading specialists provide instruction for students throughout the school to improve reading achievement. This instruction may involve a whole class or a small group of students. Lessons are designed to build student's usage of reading strategies while promoting fluency and comprehension. Second, the reading specialists serve as a resource for students,
parents, teachers, and administration. This website has been created to help link parents to helpful reading links. In addition, the reading specialists work closely with the teachers to help identify students who need further support and or testing. The goal is to help all students become successful readers.
